Staining is indicated in mesenchyme midway along the whisker follicle, but outside of the follicle proper (region b), and at the base of the whisker at the level of the hair bulb (region c). At the level of the superficial epidermis (region a), a hair can be observed protruding outside the hair canal (arrowhead). K: on a tangential horizontal section whisker follicles were cut at three different levels corresponding grossly to the three levels depicted in J. In region c the whisker follicles are cut around the hair bulb; level b corresponds to the region where faint signals are observed outside the hair proper.
