The otocyst in (C) is developmentally more advanced than the one shown in (B). (B-E) All otocysts were dissected from their adjacent tissues and are viewed from their outer surface, in the same orientation as in panel (A). The stato-acoustic ganglion was left in place in (B). Some otocysts had to be pierced to release artefactual precipitate from their inner cavity.
