Higher magnification (x50) of the sagittal sections of Fig. 5, stained with hematoxylin-eosin and Alcian blue (H&E, Alcian) or hybridized with riboprobes. An asterisk indicates signals in the superficial fascia and epimysium of the panniculus carnosus. Arrows indicate signals in presumptive ligamentous attachments apposed to cartilage primordia of the basioccipital bone and vertebrae C1 and C2 (bc), and hip joint (hj); and in the epineureum surrounding spinal nerves (ep). m marks a muscle in the neck region. Arrows also mark strong pro-a1(V) signal in the perichondria of vertebrae (pv), ribs (pr), and bones of the hip joint (ph).
