Photomicrographs are shown for parasagittal (top panel) and sagittal (bottom panel) serial sections of a 15.5 dpc embryo characterized by staining with hematoxylin-eosin and Alcian blue (H&E, Alcian) or by in situ hybridization with antisense riboprobes. Photomicrographs are bright-field (H&E, Alcian) or dark-field (in situ hybridizations). Asterisks denote signals in superficial fascia and epimysia of developing muscles of the anterior chest wall and panniculus carnosus. Arrows mark signals in presumptive ligamentous attachments apposed to cartilage primordia of the exoccipital bone (ex), basioccipital bone and vertebrae C1 and C2 (bc), and hip joint (hj). An arrowhead marks signal within tendons of the hindlimb.
