Caption Postnatal abnormalities in Hs6st1tm1.1Wvc/Hs6st1tm1.1Wvc mice. A: Graph represents changes in body weight (in grams, mean +/- standard error) of Hs6st1tm1.1Wvc/Hs6st1tm1.1Wvc (-/-) males (red; dashed line) and females (green; dashed line) compared to their Hs6st1tm1.1Wvc/Hs6st1+ male (red line) and female (green line) littermates. At 3.5 weeks there is already a significant decrease in body weight when homozygous mutant males (11.7 +/- 1.3; n = 6) and heterozygous males (17.4 +/- 0.5; n = 11) are compared (P = 0.004; Student's t-test). The same is true when homozygous mutant females (9.8 +/- 1.0; n = 9) and heterozygous females (15.3 +/- 0.6; n = 10) are compared (P= 0.0002 Student's T-test). The difference in body weight for both males and females becomes even more striking after the tenth week of age. At each time point at least 6 homozygous mutant and 10 heterozygous mice have been analyzed. B: Homozygous and heterozygous females at week 10. C: During the first 20 weeks of age homozygous mutant mice (n = 21; 10 males, 11 females) exhibit ~30% mortality. No mortality has been detected in control group of heterozygous mice (n= 31; 19 males, 12 females).
