Safranin O staining was performed on knee joint sections prepared from litters of 1.5-month-old (A-C) and 3-month-old (D-F) wild type (A & D), heterozygous mice (B & E) and homozygous mutant mice (C & F). F: A lack of proteoglycan staining in the articular cartilage surfaces of patella and femur was observed in 3-month-old mutant joints. Instead, the proteoglycan-positive zones are shifted to deeper regions. No obvious difference of proteoglycan staining was observed in 1.5-month-old joints. Abbreviations: nodule (nod); patella (pa)
