• in spermatocytes, homologous chromosomes are able to pair but do not synapse because all the known central elements of the synaptonemal complex are missing
• however, zygotene spermatocytes show no change in the average number of REDIC1 (regulator of DNA class I crossover intermediates 1) foci per cell, indicating that REDIC1 localization is independent of synapsis
• although early recombination intermediates marked by MSH4 are formed in spermatocytes, they fail to be processed into late recombination nodules
• all known central elements of the synaptonemal complex are absent
