• 8-week-old mice injected with an adeno-associated virus serotype 8 expressing PCSK9 and then fed a high cholesterol diet to induce atherosclerosis exhibit accelerated atherosclerosis compared with controls, with an increase in plaque area in the brachiocephalic arteries, an increase in cross-sectional area of the lesions in the aortic roots, increase in proliferation rate of cells within the plaques, an increase in Lgals3 in lesions indicative of activated macrophages and dedifferentiated vascular smooth muscle cells, and a decrease in collagen in the brachiocephalic arteries
• however, no differences in plaque composition is seen in the aortic roots
