• failure of homologous chromosome separation
• however, spindles are well organized at 4 and 6 h after germinal vesicle breakdown
• impaired degradation of anaphase promoting complex/cyclosome substrates during metaphase I to anaphase I transition
• rarely show first polar body extrusion at 12 h after human chorionic gonadotropin injection suggesting an arrest at meiosis I
• arrest at metaphase I
• activation with strontium (a parthenogenetic agent) can induce a polar body extrusion
• following matings with wild-type males pregnancies are observed but no pups are born
• embryos degenerate between E9.5 and E10.5
• most zygotes are triploid
