• heart size is normal during postnatal development, 2-month-old mice show normal cardiac ventricular performance by echocardiography that remains unaffected at 18 months of age, exhibit normal gross heart morphology at 2 and 18 months of age and no ultrastructural abnormalities in the heart, similar metabolic output of isolated cardiac mitochondria as in wild-type, and cardiac hypertrophy induced by transverse aortic constriction results in a similar degree of heart growth and increase in ventricular wall thickness as in wild-type mice
• although mice show no overt changes in cardiac structure/function, expression of the paralog RPL3 is upregulated and maintained in adulthood
• mice exhibit smaller hearts at 18 months of age, but not at 2 months
• mice exhibit a mild but significant reduction in heart weight over time
