• precursor cells from inguinal brown adipose tissue show impaired differentiation into brown adipocytes
• precursor cells from inguinal brown adipose tissue are insensitive to eicosapentaenoic acid treatment
• fewer clusters of multilocular adipocytes in inguinal white adipose tissue following cold exposure
• precursor cells from inguinal white adipose tissue show delayed differentiation at 3 days in culture but reach near wild-type levels by 7 days
• ability of eicosapentaenoic acid treatment to induce FGF21 expression and release is reduced in beige adipocytes
