reproductive system
• loss of early spermatocytes contributes to reduced gonad volume
• at 2 months of age, TUNEL assays indicate a significant increase in apoptosis, primarily in the outer layers of the seminiferous tubules where early spermatocytes are differentiating, unlike in wild-type testes
• at 1 month of age ovaries are smaller than ovaries of normal siblings
• by 6 months of age, ovary size normalizes as somatic cells have replaced volume lost by depletion of germ cells
• by 5 weeks of age testes are smaller compared to testes of normal siblings
• revealed at 6 months of age by TEM
• TUNEL assays detected a significant increase in apoptosis in outer layers of seminiferous tubules
• from 1-6 months of age few mature sperm are found

endocrine/exocrine glands

homeostasis/metabolism
• serum FSH levels are signficantly higher compared to levels found for normal
• in contrast, serum estradiol levels were identical at 1 and 6 months of age
• serum LH levels are signficantly higher compared to levels found for normal
