nervous system
• 10% of cultured trigeminal neurons from P0 mice are responsive to bath-applied mustard oil (MO) or allicin compared to 25% of wild-type neurons; responses are smaller or develop more slowly than in wild-type

behavior/neurological
• topical application of mustard oil to the hindpaw produces no acute responses like licking compared to robust responses in wild-type mice
• mutants do not display decrease in mechanical threshold (hypersensitivity) after mustard oil treatment like wild-type
• bradykinin-evoked hyperalgesia (decreased paw withdrawal latency from heat source) is not observed in mutant animals
• mutants do not display decrease in thermal threshold (hypersensitivity) after mustard oil treatment like wild-type
nervous system
• cultured trigeminal neurons from P0 mice show no response to bath-applied mustard oil (MO) or allicin compared to 25% of wild-type neurons (as determined by live cell calcium imaging)
• cultured neurons from the dorsal root ganglia are unresponsive to MO or allicin, compared to 24% of wild-type neurons
• acrolein-evoked responses are absent in cultured mutant trigeminal neurons, whereas acrolein and pentenal evoke large increases in calcium in MO-sensitive neurons
• in response to bradykinin, cultured mutant trigeminal neurons show significantly attenuated responses compared to wild-type neurons (determined by calcium influx)
immune system
• mustard oil-evoked swelling of treated paw is reduced compared to controls (7% vs 22% increase in thickness)
