Krt4tm1Rak/Krt4tm1Rak mice exhibit abnormalities of multiple epithelial tissues

digestive/alimentary system
• tongue normal at 2 months of age but cellular hyperplasia seen on the ventral surface only at 5 months of age
• interdigitations into the submucosa similar to those seen on the dorsal surface
• cell proliferation found throughout the tongue epithelium rather than being restricted only to the basal layer
• overall thickening of the epithelium with little cell differentiation
• suprabasal layers with abnormal nuclei and a clear area surrounding the nucleus
• reduced keratohyalin granules
• diffuse and disorganized keratin layer becoming more disorganized from 2 to 5 months
• in the basal epithelial layer with abnormal, enlarged nuclei having large nucleoli
• cell proliferation found throughout the esophageal epithelium rather than being restricted only to the basal layer
• increased basal layer cellularity in the forestomach at 2 and 5 months of age

vision/eye
• thickened with basal cell hyperplasia and abnormal nuclear morphology seen at 2 months

pigmentation
• age dependent increase in melanin deposition

craniofacial
• tongue normal at 2 months of age but cellular hyperplasia seen on the ventral surface only at 5 months of age
• interdigitations into the submucosa similar to those seen on the dorsal surface
• cell proliferation found throughout the tongue epithelium rather than being restricted only to the basal layer

integument
• age dependent increase in melanin deposition
• age dependent increase in melanin deposition

growth/size/body
• tongue normal at 2 months of age but cellular hyperplasia seen on the ventral surface only at 5 months of age
• interdigitations into the submucosa similar to those seen on the dorsal surface
• cell proliferation found throughout the tongue epithelium rather than being restricted only to the basal layer
