Caption Histopathology of epithelia in Krt4tm1Rak/Krt4tm1Rak and wild-type littermate mice. Micrographs of Krt4tm1Rak/Krt4tm1Rak tissues are shown on the left, wild-type littermate control on the right. All tissues were formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded, cut at 4 um, and stained with hematoxylin-eosin. The scale bar represents 20 um. A: Mutant, 2 months of age, esophagus. Note the distrurbed architecture and hyperplasia of the epithelium. B: Wild-type, 2 months of age, esophagus. Regular appearance of the esophagus. C: Mutant, 5 months of age, esophagus. Changes are apparent as in A, but more pronounced. Note the increased epithelial thickness and hemorrhagic exudate in the lumen. D: Wild-type, 5 months of age, esophagus. Regular appearance. E: Mutant, 5 months of age, cornea. Note hyperplasia and immaturity of the epithelial layers. F: Wild-type, 5 months of age, cornea. Regular epithelial appearance.
