• reduced ability of epithelial cells of involuting mammary glands to engulf apoptotic cells
• 2-3 times more apoptotic cells found in the involuting mammary gland than in controls after 2 days
• at day 4 of involution, alveoli of involuting glands with enlarged lumina containing cell debris
• enlarged debris filled ducts still present at day 10
• redevelopment of mammary glands is abnormal due to defects in involution process
• presence of fat pads as well as abnormal ducts and alveoli interfere with redevelopment
• reduced production of milk proteins
• decreased milk production

integument
