• sleep deficit when subjected to cold and fasting challenge
• during the first 1 to 6 hours of the fasting day under cold conditions, mice exhibit reduced and fragmented NREMS and reduced REMS compared with wild-type mice
• during hours 7 through 16 of fasting under cold conditions, mice exhibit disrupted sleep with increased NREMS compared with the first phase while still being fragmented
• during hours 17 through 24 of fasting under cold conditions, mice exhibit suppressed NREMS and almost complete absence of REMS compared with wild-type mice
• no NREMS or REMS bouts are observed in the last 3 hours of a 24 hour fast under cold conditions
• however, mice subjected to a fast alone exhibit normal body temperature responses
• reduced with shortened episodes when subjected to cold
