immune system
• lymph node T cells hyperproliferate in response to anti-CD3 and anti-CD28 stimulation
• there is a decrease in the percentage of pro-B cells found in bone marrow (1.2% versus 1.6%)
• the percentage of neutrophils in circulation is reduced from 22.9% in wild-type to 14.6% in these mice
• the percentage of IgM+ B cells in circulation is reduced from 7.05% in wild-type to 4.88% in these mice
• the number of red pulp macrophages found in the spleen are reduced
• the percentage of monocytes in circulation is reduced from 13.1% in wild-type to 7.3% in these mice
• B cell follicles are ill-defined with a vague B/T cell interface
• bone marrow derived macrophages produce half or less TNF than controls when stimulated with LPS
• defect can be rescued by exogenous IFNbeta
• in vivo production of TNF is reduced in the B cell follicles of the spleen
• production of TNF by activated CD4+ and CD8+ T cells is also reduced

neoplasm
• mice inoculated with murine carcinoma line LLC-1 have larger tumors 18 days later compared to controls (mean of 518 mm3 vs. 372 mm3in controls)

hematopoietic system
• lymph node T cells hyperproliferate in response to anti-CD3 and anti-CD28 stimulation
• the number of CFU-GM isolated from bone marrow is about half that of controls
• there is a decrease in the percentage of pro-B cells found in bone marrow (1.2% versus 1.6%)
• the number of BFU-E isolated from bone marrow is slightly less than controls
• the percentage of neutrophils in circulation is reduced from 22.9% in wild-type to 14.6% in these mice
• the percentage of IgM+ B cells in circulation is reduced from 7.05% in wild-type to 4.88% in these mice

immune system
• IFN-beta secretion does not occur
• mice have increased susceptibility to vaccinia virus
• infection with 103 PFUs leads to increased weight loss, visible signs of illness and death of one mouse out of six infected compared to little weight loss and no disease symptoms or deaths in controls
• higher titers of virus are detected in the brains and lungs of mutant mice 5 to 7 days after infection with 103 PFUs
• infection with 104 or 105 PFUs leads to death within 8 days for all mutant mice after rapid weight loss and severe signs of illness
• controls have mild-to intermediate signs of illness with one lethality occurring out of 7 mice infected

homeostasis/metabolism
• IFN-beta secretion does not occur
