vision/eye
• the amplitude of the c-wave is reduced at 12 months of age, but not at 8 weeks of age
• however, no other component of the dc-ERG is different and mice show normal ERG a-waves and b-waves even at 12 months of age

homeostasis/metabolism
• plasma free polyunsaturdated fatty acid (linoleic acid and arachidonic acid) levels are decreased at 14 months of age

mortality/aging
• mutants challenged with Psuedomonas aeruginosa succumb in the second day after challenge while no wild-type mice die

immune system
• when peritoneal inflammation is induced with glycogen in mutants, a decreased number of neutrophils is elicited
• after injection of chicken egg albumin in the tail and administration of antibodies to egg albumin intratracheally, the null mice exhibit almost complete protection from inflammatory response upon examination of lung tissue
• mutants are unable to clear intrapulmonary-instilled Pseudomonas aeruginosa, despite an increase in neutrophil influx, and succumb to pneumonia
• however, mutants are able to clear the bacteria when challenged intraperitoneally
• mutants challenged with a sublethal dose of Pseudomonas become superinfected with secondary bacterial strains

hematopoietic system
• when peritoneal inflammation is induced with glycogen in mutants, a decreased number of neutrophils is elicited

vision/eye
• apoptosis levels are increased in the retinas at 3 months and further increased at 14 months
• mice immunized with 4-HNE-adducted protein (HNE-MSA) show elevated cell apoptosis as indicated by elevated annexin V levels compared to wild-type mice
• density of rod bipolar cells is decreased at 3 months and declines further at 14 months of age
• density of horizontal cells is decreased
• the normal structure of the outer segment discs is lost at 6 months of age
• retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) cell nuclei are shrunken or apoptotic at 6 months
• the inner nuclear layer is thinner at 3 and 14 months of age
• outer nuclear layer thinning is seen at older ages
• the outer nuclear layer is disorganized at 3 months of age
• mice show progressive retinal cell loss
• the fast oscillation is reduced at 6 months of age
• mice immunized with 4-HNE-adducted protein (HNE-MSA) show a more severe reduction in ERG amplitude, however this phenotype is not related to immune responses as IL17-producting cells are diminished
• by 14 weeks of age, but not at 6 weeks, ERG a-waves are reduced and the reduction progresses with increasing age
• by 14 weeks of age, but not at 6 weeks, ERG b-waves are reduced and the reduction progresses with increasing age
• the amplitude of the c-wave is reduced at 6 months of age
