  • Experiment
391 (SM/J x A/J)F2 animals were genotyped at 90 polymorphic loci to identify QTLs associated with body weight. Parental strain SM/J weighs approximately 65% less than parental strain A/J. Significant linkage to body weight was detected on mouse Chromosome 8 (Bwq3) and mouse Chromosome 18 (Bwq4). Bwq3 spans 53 cM 69 cM on chromosome 8 with a peak LOD score of 4.6 at 56 cM near D8Mit88. Bwq3 appears to exhibit recessive or additive inheritance where SM/J-derived alleles are associated with increased body weight. Bwq4 spans 20 cM - 54 cM on chromosome 18 with a peak LOD score of 4.8 at 28 cM near D18Mit15. SM/J-derived alleles appear to confer increased body weight in a dominantly inherited fashion at this locus. Early growth response 1 (Egr1) and glucocorticoid receptor 1 (Nr3c1) are possible candidate genes for Bwq4. No candidate genes have been identified in the region of Bwq3. Suggestive linkages to body weight were detected on mouse Chromosomes 2, 6, 7, 15, and 19 (LOD<3.5).
