Electron microscopy of ascending aortic cross-sections from wild type (+/+, C and E) and Eln^tm1Dyl/Eln⁺ (+/-, D and F) mice at birth. Subendothelial (C and D) and medial sections (E and F) for both genotypes are compared. in wild type aortae, circumferentially oriented smooth muscle cells are interposed between well developed elastic lamellae. Note that elastic lamellae are abnormal and ~50% thinner in heterozygous mutant aortae. Bar, 3.0um.
