Caption Immunohistochemical staining (anti-insulin, anti-glucagon) of pancreatic islets from Ins2tm1Jja/Ins2tm1Jja mice (A & D) and Ins1tm1Jja/Ins1tm1Jja mice (C & F). As early as 10 weeks of age, beta cells are destroyed in the Ins2tm1Jja/Ins2tm1Jja mice with extensive insulitis. In contrast, insulin-containing beta cells remain without insulitis for an older Ins1tm1Jja/+ male at 48 weeks (B & E) and an Ins1tm1Jja/Ins1tm1Jja female at 37 weeks.
