N normal phenotype
adipose tissue
• reduction in visceral fat mass
• fat tissue from Western diet-fed mice shows a diet-induced increase in the fat-to-water ratio; this is not seen on a standard diet
• lower absolute and relative body fat content
• average size of adipocytes in perigonadal fat pads is lower

behavior/neurological
• food intake is reduced during the light and dark phase
• mice show a reduced motor activity during the dark period but not during the light phase
• mice show reduced locomotion in the open field
• mice show increased heat tolerance on the hot plate test

growth/size/body
• lean mass relative to the body weight is increased

homeostasis/metabolism
• fasting serum insulin levels are only slightly lower
• cholesterol is reduced only in the VLDL fraction
• mice show a small, but significant, increase in body temperature
• however, no differences in the respiratory and metabolic rates are seen
• mice show improved glucose tolerance in oral glucose tolerance tests
• Western diet-fed mice show improved glucose tolerance following intraperitoneal glucose application
• females fed a Western diet show improved insulin sensitivity compared to wild-type females, indicating that diet-induced insulin resistance is reduced
• lower triacylglyceride levels; triacylglyceride levels are lower in all three lipoprotein fractions (LDL, HDL, VLDL)
