respiratory system
• nearly all mice with lung inflammation also have Charcot-Leyden crystals, hexagonal colorless crystals, within the granulomas or the bronchi
• at 40 weeks of age crystals are seen in the lungs of all females and similar changes are seen in males
• at 40 weeks of age in some mice with lung inflammation
• decrease in cytochrome c oxidase (COX) activity and ATP levels in the lungs
• at 18 weeks of age in approximately half of the mice
• variable increase in the number of inflammatory cells recovered from the lungs at 33 weeks of age
• at 40 weeks of age all females show mild to moderate chronic inflammation and similar changes are seen in males
• decrease in methacholine induced enhanced pauses in breathing at low doses of methacholine
• decrease in airway reactivity to methacholine

growth/size/body
• decreased 12% in females but only about 2% in males

homeostasis/metabolism
• females but not males have lower glucose levels in a glucose tolerance test compared to controls

behavior/neurological
• significant decrease in females (~14%) but not in males (6%)

immune system
N
• following ovalbumin (OVA) sensitization and repeated OVA airway challenge, mice show no alterations in the humoral or cellular immune response compared to challenged wild-type mice
• at 18 weeks of age in approximately half of the mice
• variable increase in the number of inflammatory cells recovered from the lungs at 33 weeks of age
• at 40 weeks of age all females show mild to moderate chronic inflammation and similar changes are seen in males
