immune system
• in vivo, nave and effector T cells have an apoptosis rate that is twice that of controls
• effector T cells also have an increased rate in apoptosis in vitro after stimulation, though nave T cells have a decreased rate of apoptosis in vitro
• naive T cells proliferate two- to five- fold greater in response to anti-CD3 while memory and effector T cells proliferate at a rate similar to controls
• there is a marked reduction in the number of T cells displaying the CD62Lhi/CD44lo/ nave phenotype in the spleen, lymph nodes and circulation
• numbers of effector/memory T cells are similar or slightly increased in the secondary lymph node tissues compared to controls
• an increase in the number of CD4+ effector cells is observed in the lung
• the percent and absolute numbers of CD4+ T cells in the blood are reduced by a half to two-thirds
• CD4+ T cell numbers are also reduced in the spleen
• the percent and absolute numbers of CD8+ T cells in the blood are reduced by a half to two-thirds
• CD8+ T cell numbers are also reduced in the spleen
• numbers of effector/memory T cells are similar or slightly increased in the secondary lymph node tissues compared to controls
• the amount of white pulp is reduced
• nave and effector CD4+ T cells have enhanced production of IFN-gamma in response to anti-CD3 stimulation
• nave and effector CD4+ T cells have enhanced production of IL-2 in response to anti-CD3 stimulation
• nave and effector CD4+ T cells have enhanced production of IL-4 in response to anti-CD3 stimulation
