• observed at E17.5, birth, 4 days of age, and becomes more prominent at 5 weeks of age when the thymus reaches its largest size, however, in adults, the size difference is less prominent
• average number of cells in the thymi is almost half that in controls
• however, no microscopic differences are observed in the thymus
• lower CD4/CD8 cell ratio of splenic T lymphocytes
• increase in the CD4 single positive fraction in E17.5 and E18.5 mutants (during early thymic development), however mutants regain normal CD4-CD8 differential at birth or thereafter
