mortality/aging
• survival normal through to birth
• many die within the first 5 days of life
• surviving mice are fertile

skeleton
• the rib fusions on the two sides of the stermum are offset from one another
• the atlas is narrower than normal
• intermediate transformation of atlas in 15% of mice, remains independent vertebrum but osseous bridges develop to skull
• atlantal neural arch is usually incomplete
• the anterior arch of the atlas is assimilated into caudal part of the basioccipital bone
• axis lacks superior articular surfaces
• thicker neural arch on axis
• cartilaginous foramina of normal atlas now in axis (sometimes only unilateral)
• axis lacks dens

cardiovascular system
• vertebral artery enters spinal canal more caudally than normal

nervous system
• first cervical nerve runs through a foramen in the floor of the skull

craniofacial
• the anterior arch of the atlas is assimilated into caudal part of the basioccipital bone
