• mutants show no vascular defects during normal development or during oxygen-induced retinopathy
• aortic ring explants embedded in Matrigel show impaired microvascular sprouting
• matrigel plugs that were excised from mutants 7 days after implantation show diminished vascularization with a 60% decrease in vascular area and hemoglobin content compared to excised plugs from wild-type
• in a corneal micropocket assay, mutants show minimal bFGF-stimulated vessel spouting in the corneas compared to wild-type
