Mutation
origin
Strain of Origin:  C57BL/6
Mutation
description
Allele Type:    Not Applicable
Mutation:    Nucleotide substitutions

Mutation detailsA polymorphism consisting of an amino acid change (I60T) in taster verses non-taster strains is predicted to produce a novel glycosylation site that would interfere with protein dimerization in non-taster strains. (J:72149)
Inheritance:    Dominant

Notes
This allele determines high preference for saccharin (0.1% solution) over water (J:5474), and is present in the following strains: C57BL/6 substrains, SWR, FVB, and ST/bJ. The allele is selectively expressed in taste receptor cells. The mechanism of preference is predicted to be related to the incentive value of the taste of saccharin rather than to the threshold for detection (J:5474).

Preference for other sweeteners (acesulfame, dulcin, and sucrose) across a panel of 26 inbred strains showed a high correlation with saccharin preference, suggesting the existence of a single receptor for sweetness (J:9874).
