From birth to 3-4 days of age, the number of melanocytes positive for dopa reaction in dorsal epidermis increases, then decreases. In contrast, the number of melanoblasts plus melanocytes is constant, then decreases. This developmental pattern is similarin C57BL/10J and C3H/He mice, but cell population sizes differ. Two semidominant genes are indicated: Melc controlling melanocyte cell number and Melb controlling melanoblast plus melanocyte number.
