This locus controls ganglioside GM1 and GD1a expression in liver and erythrocytes. SJL, SWR, PL, RFM, SWM, SL, WHT and M.m. castaneus carry the dominant allele for presence of GM1 and GD1a; BALB/c, DBA/2, C57BL/6 and most inbreds carry the allele for absence or very low expression levels.
