Analysis of reciprocal congenic strains involving a segment of mouse Chromosome 17 indicated that non - H2 genes were involved in the onset of autoimmune type 1 diabetes in NOD mice. In female mice derived from (B10.H2g7 congenic x NOD)F1 x NOD backcross a significant chi square association of mouse Chromosome 11 loci D11Nds1 and Mpo with diabetes was observed. The marker symbol Idd4 is provided for the segment on mouse Chromosome 11 associated with autoimmune type 1 diabetes in NOD mice. Importantly the F1 congenic partner in the backcross carries NOD alleles for Idd1 therefore eliminating that marker as a variable for diabetes in the offspring.
