Congenic strain C57BL/6-Guss, which has the Gus region from M. spretus, was produced by nine generations of backcrossing and selection. Using the Restriction Landmark Genomic Scanning (RLGS) method (J22223 Okazaki (1994) Biochem Biophys Res Commun Dec 30;204(3):1992-9), the authors compared profiles of C57BL/6-Guss, M. spretus, and C57BL/6 mice around the Gus mutation region. A total of 10,565 loci were examined by using seven enzyme combinations. Of these, 33 loci were mapped to the Gus region, localizing the M. spretus contribution to a <4.2 cM congenic region. The following genetic order dtermined was as follows: D5Ncvs18 - D5Ncvs63 - D5Ncvs64 - D5Mit27 - Gus - D5Ncvs65 - D5Ncvs19 - D5Ncvs20.
