  Using the males of genotype X/YSxr^a and XSxr^a/O from the cross In(X)1H x XSxr^a/YSxr^a and the males of genotype XSxr^a/Y ^*X from the cross T(X;16)/XSxr^a x In(X)1HY/^*. the authors were able to conclude there is a gene on the Y Chromosome thatis essential for normal sperm development. These results show there are 2 functional regions on the Y Chromosome, the X pairing and exchange (pseudoautosomal ) region and a Y-specific region necessary for normal sperm development (Smy).
