Notes
  • Experiment
Evidence for allelism of add and Xt was provided from molecular studies and mating studies. The add mutation was characterized by a transgene insertion that also caused a one base pair replacement in the transgene flanking DNA. Xt was characterized as a deletion of at least 80 kb covering the region flanking the add insertion site. Although it was not shown that add and Xt mutations affect the same transcripts, the similarity of the phenotypes produced by the add and Xt mutations suggest allelism. Further, mating studies show that doubly heterozygous (add/Xt) displayed limb abnormalities reminiscent of Xt homozygotes.
