Chromosome substitution strains (consomic lines) derived from A/J donor chromosomes on a C57BL/6J genetic background were used to identify QTLs for anxiety-related behavior. Six male animals from each consomic line were phenotyped for anxiety-related behaviors, risk assessment, exploration, memory, locomotion, and other behaviors using the modified hole board test. Parental strain A/J displays high anxiety-like behavior and decreased exploration compared to parental strain C57BL/6J.

Almost all chromosomes appear to harbor at least one QTL related to anxiety-like behaviors, with clustering of QTLs on chromosome 1, chromosome 10 and chromosome 19. The authors chose to focus on mouse Chromosome 19 by phenotyping an additional 21 mice to confirm linkage. This chromosome is associated with anxiety, risk assessment, and direct exploration. The QTL is tentatively designated Arbq1 (anxiety-related behavior QTL 1). Authors are to report on fine mapping of this QTL using an F2 intercross between C57BL/6J and C57BL/6J-Chr 19A/J mice in a future publication. Exq4 is a previously identified anxiety QTL mapping to 34 cM on chromosome 19.

Novel linkage to anxiety-like behaviors mapped to the Y chromosome in the C57BL/6J-Chr YA/J line. This locus istentatively designated Arbq2 (anxiety-related behavior QTL 2). Arbq2 shows significant linkage to the modified hole board test, anxiety, and "other behavior." Arbq2 also shows suggestive linkage to directed and undirected exploration.
