QTLs associated with ear wound healing were mapped using 317 (AIRmax x AIRmin)F2 animals. These lines were derived from 8 inbred strains and selected for maximal acute inflammatory reaction (AIRmax) or minimal acute inflammatory reaction (AIRmin). AIRmaxdisplays significant ear punch healing after 30 days whereas AIRmin does not. Linkage analysis was performed using 111 polymorphic markers.

Significant linkage to ear wound healing mapped to 44.4 cM on mouse Chromosome 14 near D14Mit194 (LRS=12.8). This locus explains 21% of the variance and is named Ewrq1 (ear wound repair QTL 1). Ang at 18 cM is a potential candidate gene for Ewrq1. Musz3 (40.4 cM) and Heal12 (12 cM) are previously identified QTLs mapping to chromosome 14.

Interaction of Ewrq1 with Salmonella resistance (RR) and susceptibility (SS) alleles at Slc11a1 was examined in AIRmaxRR, AIRmaxSS, AIRminRR, and AIRminSS sublines. Female AIRmaxSS animals display complete ear closure, and AIRmaxSS males display faster ear wound closure compared to AIRmaxRR males. This finding suggests Slc11a1SS alleles help promote ear wound healing. Animals from AIRminSS and AIRminRR did not display ear wound closure.

Suggestive linkage to wound healing mapped to 25.7 cM on mouse Chromosome1 near D1Mit236 (LRS=10.2). This locus explains 17% of the variance. Slc11a1 (39.2 cM) is a potential candidate gene for this locus. Previously identified wound healing QTL Stheal1 (49.2 cM) also maps to chromosome 1.
