    QTLs associated with susceptibility to Salmonella typhimurium were mapped using 247 (AcB61 x 129S6)F2 animals and 249 (AcB64 x DBA/2J)F2 animals. AcB61 and AcB64 are Salmonella-resistant recombinant inbred strains derived from A/J and C57BL/6J. Animals were infected with 103 CFUs of S. typhimurium and evaluated for liver and spleen bacterial load 4 days post-infection.

    Ity4 (immunity to S. typhimurium 4) mapped to 44 cM on mouse Chromosome 3 (LOD=28.8) in the (AcB61 x 129S6)F2 cross. Ity4 exhibits dominant inheritance with 129S6-derived alleles conferring resistance to S. typhimurium. The 1.5-LOD support interval extends from 72.7 Mb to 100.5 Mb. Ity4 explains 42.1% of the variance.

    Ity5 (immunity to S. typhimurium 5) mapped to 117 cM on mouse Chromosome 2 (LOD=4.6) in the (AcB61 x 129S6)F2 cross. After adjusting for Ity4 on chromosome 3 the LOD score of Ity5 increased to 6.5 with peak linkage at 121 cM. 129S6-derived alleles at Ity5 confer resistance to S. typhimurium infection with additive inheritance. The 1.5-LOD support interval extends from 165.2 Mb to 180 Mb. Ity5 explains 7.5% of the variance.

    Ity6 (immunity to S. typhimurium 6) mapped to 27 cM on mouse Chromosome 14 (LOD=5.3) in the (AcB64 x DBA/2J)F2 cross. The 1.5-LOD support interval extends from 44.4 Mb to 84.4 Mb. DBA/2J-derived alleles at Ity6 confer Salmonella resistance with recessive inheritance. This locus explains 7.4% of the variance.

    Ity7 (immunity to S. typhimurium 7) mapped to 52.8 cM on mouse Chromosome 7 (LOD=4.3) in the(AcB64 x DBA/2J)F2 cross near SNP rs3726275. The 1.5-LOD support interval extends from 87.9 Mb to 105 Mb. AcB64-derived alleles at Ity7 confer Salmonella resistance with recessive inheritance. Ity7 explains 5.7% of the variance.

    Ity8 (immunity to S. typhimurium 8) mapped to 56 cM on mouse Chromosome 15 (LOD=5.4) in the (AcB64 x DBA/2J)F2 cross near SNP rs3676400. The 1.5-LOD support interval spans 88.3 Mb to 102.6 Mb. AcB64-derived alleles at Ity8 confer Salmonella resistance with recessive inheritance.Ity8 explains 4% of the variance.

    Several suggestive Salmonella resistance loci were identified in the (AcB64 x DBA/2J)F2 cross. These are located at 51 cM on mouse Chromosome 3 (LOD=3.5), 7.5 cM on mouse Chromosome 10 (LOD=3.8), 58 cM on mouse Chromosome 11 (LOD=3), 68.7 cM on mouse Chromosome 12 (LOD=3.4), 51.6 cM on mouse Chromosome 15 (LOD=3.6), 38 cM on mouse Chromosome 19 (LOD=3.6), and 45 cM on mouse Chromosome X (LOD=3.2).
