Genetic loci influencing barrel field size in adult mice were mapped using 10 BXD (B=C57BL/6J; D=DBA/2J) recombinant inbred (RI) strains. A panel of 300 polymorphic markers was used for the genome scan. Brain weight and body weight was measured in animals between 42 and 63 days of age. Posterior medial barrel subfield and anterior lateral barrel subfield areas were measured by staining brain sections with cytochrome oxidase. Parental strain DBA/2J exhibits larger combined barrel field area compared to parental strain C57BL/6J even though brain and body weight is smaller in DBA/2J.

Significant linkage to barrel field size mapped to 33 cM on mouse Chromosome 8 near D8Mit145 (p=0.0011). This locus is named Bfsz1 (barrel field size 1).

Significant linkage to barrel field size mapped to 21 cM on mouse Chromosome 10 near D10Mit3 (p=0.0018). This locus is named Bfsz2 (barrel field size 2).

A locus just under the significance threshold mapped to 45 cM on mouse Chromosome 2 near D2Mit37 (p=0.0025).
