Notes

Analysis of 13 AXB/BXA (A=A/J; B=C57BL/6J) recombinant inbred (RI) strains mapped resistance to Listeria monocytogenes to mouse Chromosome 2 near the Hc locus (23.5 cM). This locus is named Lsr1 (listeria resistance 1). Parental strain A/J is susceptibleto L. monocytogenes whereas parental strain C57BL/6J is resistant. The A/J-derived allele at Lsr1 confers susceptibility to L. monocytogenes and the C57BL/6J-derived allele at Lsr1 confers resistance. A second yet unmapped modifyier locus is believed to exist.

Interestingly, A/J and all of the susceptible AXB/BXA RI strains are deficient for hemolytic complement C5 encoded by Hc. Infusion of C5 into the serum of susceptible strain A/J conferred protection agains L. monocytogenes.
