A population of (C57BL/6 x NZB)F1 x NZB backcross animals were analyzed for linkage to anti-erythrocyte autoantibody (AEA) production. Parental strain NZB exhibits AEA production starting at 4 months of age whereas parental strain C57BL/6 and F1 animals do not exhibit AEA production up to 13 months of age. A locus named Aem1 (anti-erythrocyte autoantibody modifier 1) mapped to mouse Chromosome 4 upstream of Mup1 (27.8 cM). C57BL/6J-derived alleles at Aem1 confer inhibition of AEA production with dominantinheritance. A potential candidate gene for Aem1 is Cd72 (22.5 cM, formerly Lyb2) but parental strain C57BL/6 and NZB were found to share the same allele at Cd72.
