    Linkage analysis was performed using 24 BXD recombinant inbred (RI) strains to identify QTLs associated with peak whole body bone mineral density (B=C57BL/6J; D=DBA/2J). Significant linkage was detected on mouse Chromosomes 1, 2, 4 and 11.

    On mouse Chromosome 1, peak linkage occurs at 101.5 cM near D1Mit291 with a LOD score of 6.2. This locus is named Pbmd1 (peak bone mineral density 1) and shows synteny to human Chromosome 1q12-q43.

    On mouse Chromosome 2, peak linkage occurs at 48.1 near D2Mit94with a LOD score of 11. This locus is named Pbmd2 (peak bone mineral density 2) and shows synteny to human Chromosome 2q21-q32 and 11p-q12. Pbmd2 coincides with a previously identified QTL named Bomd3 (48 cM).

    On mouse Chromosome 4, peak linkage occurs at 69.8 cM near D4Mit312 with a LOD score of 12.3. This locus is named Pbmd3 (peak bone mineral density 3) and shows synteny to human Chromosome 1p36.3-p34.1.

    On mouse Chromosome 11, peak linkage occurs at 32 cM near D11Mit349 with a LOD score of 10.1. This locus is named Pbmd4 (peak bone mineral density 4) and shows synteny to human Chromosome 5q31-q35 and 7p13-p22.
