QTLs associated with novelty/stress-induced locomotor activation were mapped using a series of recombinant inbred (RI) and recombinant congenic (RC) strains derived from C57BL/6J and A/J progenitor strains. Progenitor strain C57BL/6J exhibits greater activation of locomotor activity when placed in a novel open field environment compared to progenitor strain A/J. 1159 animals from the AXB/BXA RI series were genotyped with a panel of 780 polymorphic markers. 13 AcB and 31 BcA RC strains were genotyped witha panel of 625 polymorphic markers.

In the AXB/BXA RI population, a locus at 37 cM on mouse Chromosome 8 near D8Mit305 (LOD=3.84) showed significant linkage to locomotor activation in a novel environment. The interval between D8Mit132 (33 cM) and D8Mit305 (37 cM) showed maximum linkage (LOD=4.1) to the phenotype. This locus is designated Nsila6 (novelty/stress induced locomotor activation 6). The C57BL/6J-derived allele at Nsila6 is associated with increased novelty/stress induced activation of locomotor activity. Nsila6 shows interaction with a locus on mouse Chromosome 6 at 3.3 cM near D6Mit50, which is most likely the same locus as Nsila5. Animals homozygous for C57BL/6J-derived alleles at both Nsila6 and Nsila5 exhibit the greatest locomotor activation in a novel environment.

In the AcB/BcA RC population, a locus at 59 cM on mouse Chromosome 8 near D8Mit186 showed significant linkage to locomotor activation in a novel environment. The QTL interval spans 47 cM - 73 cM. This locus is designated Nsila7 (novelty/stress induced locomotor activation 7). The A/J-derived allele at Nsila7 is associated with increased novelty/stress induced activation of locomotor activity. A previously identified stress-related QTL mapping near Nsila7 is Siafq1 (56 cM).
