Linkage analysis was performed on 400 (C57BL/6J x DBA/2J)F2 animals and 26 BXD RI strains to identify QTLs associated with skeletal phenotypes. A panel of 672 microsatellite markers was used in the genome scan for the BXD RI group and 96 microsatellite markers at a resolution of 15-20 cM were used in the genome scan for the F2 group. Loci identified with significant linkage in the F2 group and confirmed in the BXD RI group are reported here.

On mouse Chromosome 17 an interval between 18 cM - 50 cM showed linkage to femur length, femur yield displacement, and body mass index. This locus is named Bntq16 (bone traits QTL 16). Maximum linkage occurred at 18 cM for femur length (LOD=4.6). Previously identified bone QTLs mapping near Bntq16 are Fembrs4 (18 cM) and Tbbmd7 (6.6 cM). A second interval between 50 cM - 57 cM showed linkage to femur stiffness, neck ultimate displacement, and femur yield displacement. This locus is named Bntq17. Maximum linkage occurred at 57 cM for femur yield displacement (LOD=5.1). A previously identified bone QTL mapping near Bntq17 is Feml3 (48 cM).
