  Genetic mapping showed that NM3 was localized to mouse Chromosome 2 . Further crossing showed the locus to reside within a 1.07-cM distance between D2Mit124 and D2Mit379. Six hundred and twenty-one mice (121 affected, 500 unaffected) in two intercrosses (RIIIS/J x CAST/Ei and RIIIS/J x C57Bl/6J) were used to map the locus.
