Linkage analysis was performed on 88 animals from a SWR x (SWR x NZB)F1 backcross population to identify QTLs associated with lupus phenotypes. (SWR x NZB)F1 hybrid animals are susceptible to lupus nephritis. Animals were sero-typed at 9-12 months of age. 116 autosomal microsatellite markers at an average spacing of 10.6 cM were used for the genome scan.

Suggestive linkage to elevated serum IgG3 antibodies mapped to 86 cM on mouse Chromosome 1 near D1Mit15 (LOD=3.2). This locus coincides with a previously identified QTL named Swrl1 (SWR lupus locus 1). SWR-derived alleles at this locus confer increased IgG3 antibodies with a recessive mode of inheritance.

Weak linkage to IgG anti-dsDNA and anti-ssDNA antibodies was also detected at 33 cM near D1Mit2(LOD=1.87). This locus maps near a previously identified QTLs named Sle7 (32.8 cM) and Yaa2 (32.8 cM). SWR-derived alleles at D1Mit2 confer increased anti-dsDNA and anti-ssDNA antibodies with a recessive mode of inheritance.
