More than 1000 animals from an (M16i x L6)F2 intercross were typed for 63 polymorphic markers over 19 autosomes to identify QTLs associated with growth traits. Body weight was measured at 21, 42, and 70 days of age. Tail length was measured at 70 days asan indicator of skeletal growth. Parental strain M16i exhibits high weight gain between 21 and 42 days of age while parental strain L6 exhibits low weight gain. LOD=3.3 was used as the cutoff for statistically significant linkage.

On mouse Chromosome 3, an interval between D3Mit130 and D3Mit97 contains QTLs Lgq3 (LOD=4.5), Lgaq4 (LOD=3.8), and W10q3 (LOD=15.5). Lgq3 peaks at 15.8 cM. M16i-derived alleles at Lgq3 confer increased late growth with recessive or additive inheritance. Lgq3 explains 2.5% of the variance. Lgaq4 peaks at 19.8 cM. M16i-derived alleles at Lgaq4 confer increased late growth with recessive or additive inheritance. This locus explains 2.4% of the variance. The 1 LOD confidence interval of W10q3 spans 23.7 cM - 40.5 cM and peaks at 29.7 cM. M16i-derived alleles at W10q3 confer increased body weight at 10 weeks of age with additive inheritance. This locus explains 7% of the variance.

The interval between D3Mit19 and D3Mit18 contains QTLs Egq3 (LOD=8.8), Egaq1 (LOD=5.7), W6q7 (LOD=9.3), W10q4 (LOD=14.9), and W3q9 (LOD=5.5). The 1 LOD confidence interval of Egq3 spans 32.7 cM - 52.3 cM and peaks at 39.7 cM. M16i-derived alleles at Egq3 confer increased early growth with a recessive or additive mode of inheritance. This locus explains4.8% of the variance. The 1 LOD confidence interval of Egaq1 spans 25.7 cM - 53.1 cM and peaks at 39.7 cM. M16i-derived alleles at Egaq1 confer increased early growth adjusted for 6 week body weight with recessive or additive inheritance. This locus explains 2.9% of the variance. The 1 LOD confidence interval of W6q7 spans 31.7 cM - 56.4 cM and peaks at 47.7 cM. M16i-derived alleles at W6q7 confer increased body weight at 6 weeks of age with recessive or additive inheritance. This locus explains 7% of the variance. The 1 LOD support interval of W10q4 spans 40.5 cM - 54 cM and peaks at 47.7 cM. M16i-derived alleles at W10q4 confer increased body weight at 10 weeks of age with additive inheritance. This locus explains 9.5% of the variance. The 1 LOD confidence interval of W3q9 spans 41.9 cM - 60.8 cM and peaks at 52.9 cM. M16i-derived alleles confer increased body weight at 3 weeks of age with dominant inheritance. This locus explains 4.2% of the variance.
