A panel of 12 consomic mouse lines were used to map age related hearing loss. The consomic lines consist of whole MSM-derived chromosomes on a C57BL/6J genetic background. Currently there are 12 incomplete consomic lines where the mice are either homozygous or heterozygous for an MSM-derived chromosome. Parental strain C57BL/6J exhibits age related hearing loss beginning at 10 months of age whereas parental strain MSM is resistant to age related hearing loss.

A consomic line for MSM-derived chromosome 17 showed resistance to age related hearing loss at 18 months of age. Heterozygous chromosome 17 consomic mice were backcrossed to C57BL/6J and linkage analysis was performed. Peak linkage occurred near D17Mit119 (38.5 cM) with P=0.0023. This locus is named Ahl3 (age related hearing loss 3). The protective MSM-derived allele of Ahl3 appears to be dominant. Examination of chromosome 17 consomic mice revealed healthy stereocilia and outer hair cells at 16 months of age. Background strain C57BL/6J usually exhibits irregular sterocilia and incomplete loss of outer hair cells by that age.
