    Linkage analysis was performed on 16 LGXSM (LG=LG/J; SM=SM/J) recombinant inbred (RI) lines to identify QTLs associated with obesity and diabetes traits. Parental strain LG/J exhibits a larger body size compared to parental strain SM/J and these two strains also differ in obesity and diabetes related traits in response to dietary fat. 506 microsatellite markers at an average spacing of 2 to 3 cM were used in the genome scan. 39 loci were mapped but only those reaching genomewide significance are reportedhere.

    On mouse Chromosome 18, an interval between D18Mit17 (20 cM) and D18Mit213 (55 cM) shows linkage to total fat pad weight. This locus is named Obsty4 (obesity 4). LG/J-derived alleles confer increased total fat pad weight at this locus. Obsty4 alsoshows suggestive linkage to inguinal fat pad weight on a high fat diet.
