Notes
  • Experiment
Linkage analysis was performed on 16 LGXSM (LG=LG/J; SM=SM/J) recombinant inbred (RI) lines to identify QTLs associated with obesity and diabetes traits. Parental strain LG/J exhibits a larger body size compared to parental strain SM/J and these two strains also differ in obesity and diabetes related traits in response to dietary fat. 506 microsatellite markers at an average spacing of 2 to 3 cM were used in the genome scan. 39 loci were mapped but only those reaching genomewide significance are reportedhere.

On mouse Chromosome 12, an interval between D12Mit2 and D12Mit6 shows linkage to spleen weight. This locus is named Splwt1 (spleen weight 1). LG/J-derived alleles confer increased spleen weight at this locus. Splwt1 also shows suggestive linkage to heart weight on a high fat diet.
